Turf grasses in lawns do not last a lifetime, despite what many lawn owners think. Like shrubs in the garden, turf grasses will become thin and straggly and require regular pruning and shaping and training.
If you keep your grasses healthy and dense and react promptly to any moss, weeds and lawn pests and diseases, then you should be able to retain the lawn in the style you are hoping for. If not, keep reading!

British Summer Time ended at the weekend and more recently with a few centimetres of snow covering the South of England last night - the first time it has snowed in October since 1934!
The numerous tasks of autumn lawn care are still necessary this month and a little cold snap will only lengthen the germination time of new grass seeds sown. Turf can be laid all year round so long as the turf farm can lift the turf.

There is an Old Wives' Tale about when to stop mowing your lawn in the autumn months. I think it is actually an Old Granddad's Tale as an excuse to put the mower away in the shed and get the slippers and pipe out in front of the fire with the feeling that the mowing function had been completed for that year!

Lawn enthusiasts will go to great lengths, not to mention expense to work on the top surface of their lawn but totally neglect, and in many cases fail to understand, what is necessary below ground to keep the grass roots healthy and aerated.
I can imagine the shopping trolley and the garden centre full of autumn lawn feed, sulphate of iron to combat any moss and perhaps some soil and seed to reinstate low and bare patches where the grass may have failed through the year but I somehow feel that spiking is not on most lawn owners to-do list.

A plant-eating predator from Japan could be used to control a superweed spreading throughout the UK, scientists believe, reports the BBC web site today.
Japanese Knotweed is an evasive weed that must be controlled now. Its' spread across the United Kingdom has been assisted greatly by lack of education and the dumping of garden green waste at waste transfer stations and local amenity dumps.
