The great thing about the dark evenings is that you can sit in front of the fire and actually find the time to watch BBC Gardeners World without feeling guilty that the garden demands a couple of hours of work in the evenings. Last night the build up for the Gardener of the Decade has started with reviews of how the 10 Gardeners of the Years since its launch in 1999 have faired since winning in their respective year. Five of the winners have agreed to battle it out for the Gardener of the Decade at the final to be held at The Eden Project.

We are all aware of seeing 'Jack Frost' on the lawns in the winter mornings. Usually we are freezing our little fingers off whilst scraping it from the windscreen of the car. Frost is actually frozen droplets of 'dew' that has frozen over night on a cold surface.
What you may not be so aware of is that following continued nights of sub zero night time temperatures that this 'air frost' will actually get into the soil making it hard to walk on becoming 'ground frost'.

The Country is currently in a bit of a cold snap and with a few weeks to go until Christmas your thoughts may be on other things except your lawn.
I mowed my lawns last weekend, on the Saturday as the Sunday was forecast to be wet, and still managed to get around quarter to half the quantity of grass clippings off the lawns compared to in the normal growing season, which could be expected to be March to October. Check out the weather here.
