The weeds are out in abundance now, probably on your lawn too! Back in March, you would have noted your first Dandelion in flower, surrounding Daisies enjoying the spring sunshine. Now the first crop of Dandelions have gone to seed, these seeds blowing in the wind, settling in your lawn, ready to develop into the next crop of weeds. Spring arrived early this year. While March 21st is traditionally the first day of spring, the astronomical event that marks the turn of the seasons – the Vernal Equinox – occured at 11.44 on Friday the 20th March.
As their name suggests, the two equinoxes of spring and autumn are the points when day and night are of equal length – at least north or south of the equator, where light and dark are a lways in balance.

The problem of trying to cure dog urine burns from appearing in your lawns is as old as the hills. There are many an Old Wives' Tale about feeding your beloved pooches Tomato Juice or Tomato Ketchup and also Pilchards. I must spend a few hours each month armed with garden Trug full of sandy loam and a few big handfuls of lawn grass seed, mixed together to fill by hand some 90 squat marks in the lawns. The worst affected lawn area is the one closest to the back door - the shortest route to taking a pee.

The Easter Holidays traditionally heralds frantic activity in the garden over the four day holiday with the Garden Centres swelling under the dramatic increase in customers. This Easter is promising to be a little wet, typical for some time out of the office but very British! The lawn will probably be the largest area within a garden but it often receives the least amount of attention. Now is the time to give your lawns some attention should you wish them to look fantastic a little later in the early summer.
