The Greenkeeper is more than just a grass manager

Galway_bayThink of a Greenkeeper and you could be forgiven for conjuring up a vision of a man sitting on a ride on mower, roll up in his mouth and a woolly hat on his head, waiting for clocking off time and a pint and a game of darts at the local.

My goodness, how things have moved on in the fast moving world of golf course stewardship. The greenkeeper is now a manager of very high quality with a wide range of responsibilities which include everything from understanding a complex computerised irrigation system to managing sea wall defences on an exposed links course.

This blog post from STRI Ecology and Environment Unit site caught the eye. Bob Taylor is the Senior Ecologist at the STRI and his job is to tour golf venues around the British Isles assisting with ecology issues.

Back in December Bob travelled to the Christy O'Connor Jnr designed Galway Bay Resort to advise the course superintendent on sea protection along it's west coast boundary.
