Londoners urged to use more turf

Turf growers associationThe Turf Growers Association have written to London Mayor Boris Johnson in a bid to encourage a wider use of turf to help combat climate change.

More and more garden owners across the United Kingdom have ripped out lawns, especially in the front, and added patios or hard standings to park cars or just to cut down on garden maintenance.

The TGA, in a press release on their website say: "The association which represents more than 70 turf growers and affiliated companies, collectively responsible for more than 70% of the UK’s cultivated turf production, stresses that turf can help mitigate the effects of flooding, extreme temperatures and drought, which were the primary environmental concerns highlighted in the publication."

Whilst we applaud the call by the TGA, returning garden spaces back to lawns does bring with it certain other factors to consider and the main one being maintenance.

Maintaining a London lawn - or any other town lawn for that matter - brings with it considerations of lower light, less air circulation and little opportunity for rest when the surface has taken a pounding from the kids or dogs.

Before rushing into returning an ugly square of concrete to a lush velvet lawn, take a look at our .PDF for advice on how to improve conditions to avoid costly mistakes and disappointment later on.
