EU Pesticide Legislation - stricter rules to be enforced

Pesticide Occasionally we have some new legislation impacting land based industries. Most of it comes from within the UK, sometimes it comes from Europe with decisions made by people who know little about the core subject matter. Remember the oddly shaped banana sale restrictions..... MEPs have voted in the European Parliament today on rules to ban dangerous chemicals in pesticides and to make it safer to use them in daily life. Legislation that will mean stricter rules on the use of pesticides throughout the European Union has been passed today 13 January 2009. The European Parliament passed the proposals for a Regulation on the Placing on the Market of Plant Protection Products by 577 votes for and 61 votes against.

The Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive was passed with 624 votes in favour, 13 against. Earlier, NFU Horticulture Board Vice-Chairman, Sarah Pettitt, told Radio 5 Live listeners about the possible impacts of the European Parliament vote on pesticides. In an interview about the proposed legislation, which could remove key crop protection products, she said: "Within the next five years it will not only mean reductions in certain crops, it will actually remove the ability to produce certain crops, particularly fruit and vegetables. The rules will come into force in 2010. There will be restrictions on certain active ingredients such as selective herbicides used in or near public areas such as schools, parks and hospitals. The horticultural and agricultural industries will lose key insecticide and fungicide active ingredients used in food production that are vital to maintain harvest yields.
