Winter is officially over....

Grassclippings - Winter has PassedTuesday 20th March 2012 heralded the end of winter and the welcome of spring with the spring vernal equinox.  The spring equinox is the first day of the solar new year and one of two days each year when the center of the sun passes over the Equator.

The weather has been rather nice of late, although some more rain might be useful for lawn owners with watering restrictions coming into place across most of the UK at the start of April.

This spring time looks like it is going to be a traditional spring with the bulbs blooming at the correct time and most importantly the lawns getting their natural spring rush of growth too.  We have not had a traditional spring for many years, and a traditional spring is an important factor in thickening up the lawn after the winter and getting some growth spurt on so that the turf grass plants may naturally rejuvinate after winter.

Now is the time to mow your lawn.  If you have not yet done so then take advantage of the nice weather and top the grass with the lawn mower, removing no more tahn 25% off the growth.  You may not get a lot off into the grass box but your lawn will thank you for it and the grasses will be naturally stimulated to start tillering to cover any minor bare areas.

With water restrictions looming, a weed free and moss free lawn with healthy desirable turf grasses will survive dryer weather better than a lawn covered in weeds and moss and weed grasses so plan to fertilise your lawn and also weed kill it to kill off any weeds.
