Celebrate on a lawn
Just in case you are not fully aware, marking 60 years of The Queen's reign, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations will centre around an extended weekend on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June. It's a four day weekend for most.
60 years of The Queen's reign
The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002.
The first British monarch to mark 50 years on the throne in a significant way was George III. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897.
The Diamond Jubilee website features the latest news, photographs, announcements and historical information about The Queen's 60-year reign. It also includes an interactive timeline, quizzes, puzzles and the official images of The Queen released for the Diamond Jubilee. Visitors can send a congratulatory message to The Queen.
The Managing Editor of Grass Clippings can tell a little story of having sold to the Royal Household some organic poultry fertiliser for fertilising the lawns at Buckingham Palace, only to then have to explain to the Queen's Officials what that awful smell was coming from the lawns! What he did not know until many years later when informed by the Queen's Grounds Manager, was the fact that the Royal Corgies were heading out of the Palace and then rolling on the lawns and fertiliser.... only to take the product and smell back into the Palace on their fur. He still has his head!
The official emblem for The Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012 is the winning design following a national competition for children aged between 6 and 14. It was drawn by 10-year-old Katherine Dewar, from Chester. Well done!
