Wettest April gives way to hottest day so far

Grassclippings - Hottest Day of YearThe wettest April on record seemed a distant memory for many today as Britain welcomed the warmest day of the year so far.  The mercury crept up to 23.8C in Southampton this afternoon and looks set to climb further still over the next few days.

A high like this has not been seen for two almost months, with the south coast outshining the peak temperature of 23.6C enjoyed in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, on March 27.  Those able to make the most of the midweek sunny spell have been rushing to the country's parks and coasts.

It follows weeks of weather so wet that officials have had to coin a new name for the strange situation whereby Britain found itself hit simultaneously by both floods and hosepipe bans. Environmental Stress due to Rainfall Deficit, or ‘ESRD’ for short, is the term being employed by the Environment AgencyThe agency admits it is not exactly catchy but believes it best describes the situation in the 19 counties no longer in drought.  Don't the EA come up with some rubbish?
