2012 was the second wettest year in British history, the Met Office revealed in early January.  The weather since has certainly not improved since with the great thaw resulting in more flooding.

Official figures show that 1,330mm (52.4 inches) of rain fell in the past 12 months - just 7mm short of the highest total reached in 2000.  Depressingly this new data also shows that four of the five wettest years ever to hit the UK have been since the Millennium.

The majority of the Country is covered with snow so keep an eye on the Met Office 5 Day Forecast to check as to when you may be able to view your lawn again!

The UK gets on average 33 days of snow fall or sleet a year (1971 - 2000). Most of this is snow falling on higher ground where temperatures are lower, as can be seen on the map.

Extreme Weather to Kill off British Lawns warn Experts

The traditional British lawn will become a thing of the past as changing weather patterns make it virtually impossible to create the perfect garden, experts say. 

They fear summers will become prone to extreme conditions, with periods of torrential rain and prolonged droughts becoming the norm.

As a result maintaining a classic lawn will get harder, with gardeners seeking the ‘bowling green’ look having to make do with longer grass and more daisies and buttercups.  Plants in beds and borders will also struggle to flourish in drier springs and wetter summers.
