Grassing up lawn seed names

Lawn and Grass SeedGrasses come from the plant family Gramineae.  There are over 10,000 species of grasses although only some of these have commercial use in the development of lawns and professional sports turf.

All grasses come from the Class of plants called Monocotyledons – that is they only produce one seed leaf from a seed.  Their internal structures, root structure, stem and leaf structures are different to weeds, shrubs and trees.

The names of grasses are no different to all other plants that follow the internationally recognised system of naming plants – all the names are in Latin as local plant names can vary.  The naming system is referred to the Binominal system of plant nomenclature.

Each grass can be defined by the following plant naming system:

Family Name - Gramineae – Always spelt in Title Case

Genus Name  -  Festuca – Always spelt in Title Case

Species Name  -  rubra – Always lower case

Variety Name  - litoralis - Always lower case

Cultivar Name  - Barcrown - Breeder Name for Cultivar

For example on a seed label – Chewings Fescue is written as:

Festuca rubra commutata 'Bargeen'
