Q Lawns New Wild Flower Matting raises money for Fallen Heroes

Grassclippings - Q Lawns Poppies & DaisiesTo commemorate the centenary of the First World War, Q Lawns Turf Company have introduced a new wildflower matting to their MeadowMat range.

Passchendaele Poppy Meadowmat consists of 35 species of native flowering plants and grasses pre-grown onto a matting system.  It’s simple to install – you just unroll it onto prepared ground as you would lawn turf – and it’s a really quick and easy way to establish a wildflower area.

There are already two types of Meadowmat on the market; Traditional Meadowmat emulates an old-fashioned species rich hay meadow, whilst the seedmix for Meadowmat Birds and Bees has fewer larval food plants, more nectar rich flowers and some rather lovely seed heads to feed wild birds during autumn and winter.

The newest member of the Meadowmat family, which was named in memory of one of the most horrendous campaigns of the First World War, contains mainly perennial native species but has a generous amount of bright red remembrance poppies added to the seedmix.

For every square metre of the Passchendaele Poppy Meadowmat sold between March and June 2014, 50 pence will be donated to the Royal British Legion to raise funds to help support serving members of the Armed Forces, Ex-Servicemen and Women and their families and dependents.

The idea of planting Meadowmat in memory of loved ones has been enthusiastically received.  Comments on Q Lawns’ Facebook page include

Grass Clippings - QLawns WW1 Soldier“My Grandfather used to cry when he talked about his time at Ypres in the First World War. He must have been so young and they had a lifetime blighted by the results. I want to try to carpet my garden with poppies this year as a remembrance for him and all his comrades in this the 100th year since the start of that horrible war. I think he would only have been about 18 and they went through hell” MP

“I have a small bed just waiting for this. In memory of my Grandfather who spent four years serving in the Desert Rats” CM

“My Grandad fought at Passchendaele.  A beautiful way to remember the brave boys who fought and lost their lives, and the survivors too” EG
