Chelsea Lawn Tips

Grass Clippings - Chelsea PensionersToday sees the start of the famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the highlight for many of the gardening year, and the start of the summer season.

Our office phone has already been red hot with Journalists seeking comment about the use of turf and lawns at the show.

The Chelsea Flower Show has been held in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital, London every year since 1913, apart from gaps during the two World Wars. It used to be Britain's largest flower show (it has now been overtaken by RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show), but is still the most prestigious.

The Royal Horticultural Society is a UK charity established to share the best in gardening.  Their work is driven by our simple love of plants and the belief that gardeners make the world a better place.

The lawn is the largest part of the majority of gardens yet it confuses the hell out of many a gardener.  A lawn is made up of millions of tiny grass plants all jostling for their position in the soil's ground cover carpet, in fact the lawn is the carpet of the room outside!

Grasses grow really easily, it is turning them into a lawn that is the tricky bit.  The Science and Practice of Turf Culture encompasses the disciplines of Botany, Chemistry and Physics all in harmony with each other and the vagaries of the weather too for good measure.

Lawn care should be proactive not reactive and it is when lawn owners are reactive that it can all go wrong.

You should only have turf grasses in your lawn.  Not weeds or moss.  You may get an attack from lawn grubs or larvae such as Leatherjackets and Chafer Beetles and maybe some diseases like Fusarium and Red Thread and then you can react to these and get rid of what your lawns should not have when they appear.

If you can maintain your lawn to encourage good healthy turf grasses without competetion from weeds and moss then you are half way there.  Plan to fertilise your lawn every three months with a slow release lawn fertiliser and every year at least, scarify and aerate it also with a bit of over seeding for good measure, then you should be able to create a lawn to be proud of.

This lawn advice blog has taken years to get to over 700 lawn related articles and all the content is searcheable at the top right to bring up the articles that relate to the advice that you and your lawn may require to improve it.  It is a free and well visited resource in the UK and abroad.
