Hosepipe bans are a waste of time research suggests

Grass Clippings - Hose Pipe Bans are a waste of timeHospipe bans do little to help drought-hit areas, a study suggests. In parched conditions gardeners were found more likely to fill a watering can than turn on a sprinkler to save their plants.

With scorching temperatures predicted this summer, the odds on hosepipe bans are already being slashed by the bookies.

But the study suggests water firms should try different tactics. Researchers from the Universities of Manchester, Edinburgh, Southampton and Lancaster looked at water usage in 2,000 homes.

The largest group – 38 per cent –   would not bother with a hosepipe because they have nothing to water anyway.  Only 19 per cent of those who had gardens ever plugged in a hosepipe or a sprinkler system.  And 56 per cent said they did no watering at all while 25 per cent only used jugs or watering cans.

Dr Alison Browne, of Manchester’s Sustainable Consumption Institute, said: ‘Our findings provide food for thought for those implementing hosepipe bans.
