Our Managing Editor was looking at his lawn this morning and a sports field yesterday and both looked pretty much the same.  A slightly damp surface and some discolouring of the older grass leaves in the sward.  The turf grasses look like they need a feed or maybe a little bit of soluble iron to colour the lawn up and toughen up the grasses for the onslaught of winter. 

He opted for a little bit of lawn fertiliser and prayed that the weather would remain mild enough for the fertiliser to dissolve and get into the soil to benefit the turf grass plants. He also applied CastClear to deter worm casts on his lawn.

Time to aerate your lawns

It's been really wet in October and November and your lawn is crying out for some air! 

Most lawn owners probably did not venture out into their gardens during the wet weekends of late but now the weather has dried up just a little, gardeners are getting to grips with their winter lawn care tasks ahead of the Christmas Holiday season.

Sadly, lawn aeration - some prefer to call it spiking or tining - is the very last thing that gets attention at this this time of year.  Maybe because it is a procedure that will not create an instant effect or tangible result in a short space of time. 

There are many benefits from aerating your lawn and it is one mechanical task that should be performed throughout the autumn and winter months - in fact monthly throughout the year unless the weather and lawn's surface is very dry and hard.

Stan Brouard was a carpenter prior to the second World War. He built his first wooden glasshouse at Clemrose in the Forest Parish in 1937 and grew tomatoes.  He enlisted in the RAF during 1939 and saw active service until his return to Guernsey in 1946 when he built more glasshouses.  In 1950 he began a horticultural pest and disease control business in Guernsey.  Later in 1962 he also commenced the same line of business in Jersey.
