Turf or Grass Seed?

Grass Clippings - EverGreen Grass SeedA trip to your local garden centre or DIY outlet may be a bit daunting when viewing the shelves of grass seed and selecting one to suit the needs of your lawn.

If your lawn has thinned over the winter months, why not over seed it.  The results will speak for themselves in money well spent and if you do not do all you can to improve turf density, the moss and weeds will soon take over! You have been warned.

Make sure you go armed with the dimensions of your lawn and known square metres of lawn area so you buy sufficient for the task plus 25% to allow for a margin of error on the day.

First think of the immediate needs of you lawn, does it need to be hard wearing, cope with general family life, the children and dogs or is it mostly shaded, wet, dry, or are you after a luxury lawn that you can trim every other day with your cylinder mower?

Consider the soil type, is it sandy, clay or a nice dark loam, all will have a bearing on the grass species that are likely to thrive.

A fine grass mixture will be suitable for light wear use only. This mixture will produce a fine looking lawn but it will not stand up to family type wear and tear.

A standard grass mixture - suitable for family use. This mixture will produce a great lawn which will stand up to most of the wear and tear of a normal family enjoying the garden.

With a shade tolerant mixture - suitable for use in shady areas. This will produce a lawn that can stand up to shady conditions better than the mixtures above.

A drought tolerant mixture - suitable for use in unusually dry areas. This will produce a lawn that can stand up to dry conditions better than the mixtures above.

Remember which ever grass seed suits the needs of your lawn, all will require regular feeding and maintenance. They will all require mowing a minimum of weekly in the growing season and will need over seeding when the grass thins, especially in the autumn months.
