Retaining winter lawn density
The past few weeks have been a bit wet and not ideal gardening weather. The grass density will naturally thin in the winter months but the grass is still growing with night time frosts minimal to date so your lawn has a fighting chance going forward.
Trying to retain your grass cover on your lawn from here onwards is the challenge all lawns owners will face as we approach mid winter.
Your lawn and garden is entering the period when it will have everything thrown at it and it will have to survive and will do so, with a bit of help from your action plan.
Here is a list of factors that will encourage your lawn and turf grasses to thin out:
Excessive rain and soil moisture - aerate
Disease - Fusarium Disease is an autumn lawn killer
Moss - treat it with Soluble Iron
Worm Casts - the sticky soil casts will smear on the surface of the lawn and smother the turf grasses. Treat with CastClear
North Facing - a north facing lawn will remain more in shade and grasses will thin quicker
Shrub Overhang - trim your shrubs back and repair the lawn underneath
Dog Pee - overseed these with new grass seed little and often
Mowing too short - raise the height of the lawn in the autumn months to retain grass cover
Remember - do everything in your power to retain grass cover and denisty over the autumn to preserve the grass plants until the springtime.
