Start mowing your lawn now!

Grass Clippings - Start Mowing LawnThe weather has taken a turn for the better over the past week with temperatures across parts of the UK a warm 10 degrees.  The nights may be frosty but that should not hold you back firing up the lawn mower this coming weekend.

Time to think about mowing your lawn for the first time this year if remains dry and the ground is firm.  Lawns have greened up a little naturally over the past few weeks heralding the start of spring.  A light topping with the lawn mower in the next couple of weeks will encourage spring growth and also improve the visual appearance of the garden that has suffered the ravages of a hard winter.

Once you have mown the lawn have a good look at what is left and start planning your treatment and or renovation programmes.  It is still a little early to scarify your lawn, not until you have mown it once or twice and confident that you will get some natural recovery and growth after the mechanical process.  If the weather suddenly goes cold and frosty the grass will turn white and bleached and not recover from the scarification process as expected.  Waiting a few weeks and a few more mowing sessions inbetween will pay dividends.

Follow these simple steps to get your lawn back into shape in the first few weeks of spring -

  • Clear any winter debris from the lawn like leaves and twigs
  • Check the mower over and raise the height of cut up by one or two settings
  • You are not planning to scalp the lawn – no more than 25% of the growth.  Make one pass over the lawn and collect the clippings
  • Fertilise the lawn with an Lawn Fertiliser or lawn sand as a spring starter
  • Make an application of Soluble Iron from Moss Control to retard any winter moss
  • Aerate the lawn with a solid tine
  • Control and eradicate Worm Casts with CastClear
  • Get the mower into the workshop before the rush starts
  • Buy your Spring and Summer Lawn Fertiliser requirements
