Avoid rogue turfing contractors

Grass Clippings - Badly Laid Turfed LawnsWe get a lot of traffic through this lawn advice blog where home and garden owners are seeking advice about their existing or new lawns.

This recent email is typical of many that we receive where the home owner has clearly been hood winked by a landscape contractor.  We do not need to add any further comment except it is a shame that the home owner received such a poor level of professionalism, advice and after care service.

'Hi. I had new Turf laid 11 days ago. I have been watering it for hours as instructed and yet it turned like straw...... I hired someone to rotavate, level the ground and lay the turf for me, as I am no expert. I was assured that he has 10 years experience and laid many lawns before.

Well the turf got laid, and I watered it, but it turned brown more and more each day. I could not contact the person I hired, as he was on holiday. When I contacted him, he came out the next day and took a look. He tried to blame me and said I did not water it. I showed him how uneven the ground is and how dipped the lawn was, to which he replied" it will sort itself out" I told him, that I noticed piles of weeds have been used to fill any gabs under the new turf, He said that does not matter it won't have any effect on the lawn. I know I am no expert, but my common sense tells me this is wrong.

Well today I was expecting him to come and see what can be done to rectify the issue, but he did not turn up as promised. I tried calling as well as messaging reply on either. I have a receipt for rotavating, levelling and turfing the my opinion he has not fulfilled his side of the verbal contract. I would appreciate any advice pls.'
