Deere oh Deere! Gardener filmed by Police for using his mobile phone whilst on a ride on mower
A gardener has landed himself in hot water after he was spotted using his phone behind the wheel of his ride-on lawnmower - outside a police station.
The 47-year-old council gardener allegedly pulled out his phone while sat at traffic lights right outside a police station in Ely, Cardiff.
Officers then pulled over his green John Deere ride-on lawnmower. The worker told how he picked up his phone to change some music on his way between grass-cutting jobs.
But he was accused of illegally using the phone at the wheel on a public road - even though it was a lawn-mower and not a car. The worker is set to appear in front of magistrates later this month where he could face a £200 fine, six points on his licence or both.
Police were handed dashcam footage of the gardener holding his phone in his left hand as he steered with his right - and with a marked police van on the busy road just yards behind.
Cardiff Council confirmed the man was one of their employees and said he would face disciplinary action.
A spokesman said: 'The council will be following up this matter in line with council policy and procedure.'
My comment is that I often see Police Officers using their mobile phone whilst driving. What makes them so special? Perhaps they think they are a 'cut above the rest' of us?
