Look for the Lawn Dry Patch Dark Halo

Dry patches that are hard to re-wet are the primary causes of lawn failure.  If a lawn is renovated, it is always these long-lasting dry areas that are the root cause of any seed failing to germinate and establish in these well marked and visual areas. 

You may notice a darkening halo on parts of the lawn, visible from the upstairs window. This is a good indicator that the soil underneath is starting to or has dried out.

No Mow May

The ultimate concept of No Mow May is not really to stop mowing in May specifically, or to leave whole swathes of your lawn unmown. Behind the catchy title is a simple concept: get people to change their habits so that they mow less – ideally once a month – and possibly even leave a patch or two of grass to grow long.

In our view, just getting your lawn out of winter and into spring and summer takes a lot of work and effort.  Letting your lawn go wild for a month will undo all your hard work and create a thin sward.

Lawn Fertiliser hits new ££ High

We are all aware of the rising energy and fuel prices and this has led to a huge increase in the cost of Lawn Fertiliser.

Predominantly, it is the Nitrogen element of the lawn fertiliser that has increased the most, with further increases expected.

Don’t take our word for it!  Farming UK advises online that Nitrogen fertiliser has rapidly increased in price, from just over £200 per tonne in spring to around £700 per tonne by the end of autumn.

January Lawn Care Tips

Welcome to the New Year!  With the C19 Virus still getting more active with it's new alleged strain, you may be spending more time at home than you had hoped this month until the much awaited vaccine can be rolled out.

January, still deep in Winter, is not an ideal gardening month and lawns figure less in the tasks that could be completed in the garden.

A lot of what you could do to your lawn really depends on ground conditions, including water logging, snow cover, first to a depth.

November Lawn Care Advice

As we enter November after a rather dry October where this month we saw 15 days days with rainfall out of a potential 31 days and 68mm of rain there were multi days to get out into the garden to tend and care for the lawn.  Last year we had twice as much rain at 131mm rain in 24 days.

September is a great time of year for renovating your lawn but so can be October, often with slightly better weather albeit it cooler nights.

Teh soil is still warm from the summer and the grass yields have been pretty good this year as we have had a lot of rain. No Indian summer for us this year but let that not srevent you from still enjoying your lawn and garden this month.

Lawns to be targeted by Leatherjackets

It's been a summer to savour – for Daddy Long Legs, that is.

Now homeowners have been warned to brace for an invasion of more than 200billion of the amorous insects.

Experts say the warm but wet weather has provided perfect growing conditions for crane fly larvae, or 'leatherjackets', in their underground tunnels.

And the 'sex-crazed' creatures are now hatching – with hordes expected to swarm into homes searching for a mate.
